Avatar 3D Review

by jonboy on Dec.23, 2009, under Australia, movies, review

Last night a party of three, a friend, my 8 year old son and myself, went to see Avatar, the alleged masterpiece by James C.

We arrived in perfect time only having to suffer 8 minutes of previews before being directed to don our 3D glasses much to the relief my son desperate to wear the very dorky glasses we had been given.

A quick comment about the 3D, it is very understated and not “in your face” 3D which I found refreshing.

The movie started well turning into quite the visual feast after the first 15 minutes, after which I became engrossed in what some reviewers commented as “as a slow starter” and I will admit that this movie is on the cook for a fair crack before we start to see it begin to boil, but when it does it is great.

Speaking of time, I usually can equate how much I liked a movie by how long it takes me before I check the time to see how much more of the movie I have to see/endure. Happily I can say that by time this happened over two hours of the movie had played out and we were in the exciting home stretch.

I’ll finish this short review by quoting the eight year old as the credits began to roll, “That was the best movie I have ever seen in my life”…..I’ll give him an out for later on in life by stating that it was also his first 3D movie experience.

Overall: Distinction 78/100

How did I miss this site – boozle.com.au

by jonboy on Dec.11, 2009, under Australia, beer

In a personal uplifting story soon to be made into a mini series on HBO, will be the shocking story of how I have gone most of my adult drinking life without this site:

http://www.boozle.com.au/

boozle

Boozle searches 1000’s of liquor stores in Australia to find your favourite beer, spirits and premixeddrinks at the cheapest price, and at your closest outlets.

We want to make it quick and easy to find the booze you’re looking for. If you know the brand you want then enter it in the search box or select one of the sections above to browse.

More Perth goodness – 1349 bottles of beer on the wall

by jonboy on Sep.03, 2009, under Australia, photos

Not actual container robbed

Not actual container robbed

Brazen crime or just tomfoolery, you be the judge. Though it is a damn shame to have procured so much beer (~$35,000.00) and then get nicked for it and lose your stash as well.

Its getting that a guy can’t even enjoy a beer and a quiet smoke without being arrested. :)

To be honest is Hoegaarden even a good beer ? The reviews are not that great.

4G Comes to Australia……well Perth actually

by jonboy on Sep.03, 2009, under media

Advanced internet portals

Perth's advanced routers

Mitchell Bingemann, over at The Australian reports that Kerry Stokes and the Seven Network are going to launch a 4th Generation mobile broadband service through subsidiary Vividwireless. Original Article

But why Perth of all places to test the rollout? Could it be due to the under-served broadband market in WA as stated byVividwireless chief executive Martin Mercer?

Or as Mitchell speculates is it more to do with Stokes media stranglehold in Perth making for a great integrated media strategy, either way the East Coast loses, if only things had gone differently in 1933.

When little birds sell flights

twit-virgin

virginblue twitter

Crikey’s Plane Talking has a piece about Virgin Blues tweeting of $9 fares in celebration of their 9th birthday, media release and twitter feed.

As Ben Sandilands rightly (Plane Talking author) comments, whilst this is great for both Virgin and their potential customers, it does exclude a sizable portion of the population from participation, which is the problem.

As more and more corporation’s services are delivered online in an attempt to look all web2.0 and maximise profits, this technocratic illuminato sees the vast digitally unwashed masses once again clammering at the gate to get in.

Freelance Web Design

by jonboy on Oct.22, 2008, under design, web

Will Code For $$

Will Code For $$

Well, I had better do it sooner or later and convert this site across to my freelance site, this will save me having to blog content that has either or all of the below:

  1. Candor
  2. Urgency
  3. Timeliness
  4. Pithiness
  5. Controversy

as per good old Seth Godin pointed out and referenced at Web Pages That Suck

And as you may not have realised, I’m more about designing sites then blogging about rubbish. You can though come and see what I’m artistically up to over at Humble Voice.

So shortly I’ll sit down with pencil and paper and start to rough out the site, so I can start getting some design gigs.

For anyone who arrives here before I finalise the site, I hand code sites using XHTML, CSS, PHP and javascript, with a focus on usability and Search Engine Optimistation. I can also be hired for design of Logos and Graphic content, including Flash content and animations.

Imports from Blogger

by jonboy on Sep.08, 2008, under photos, public transport

Well, went to get all my amazing photos and blogs from blogger and import them using Wordpress, only to discover/remember that it was all rubbish, well except for this shot:

Waiting at Southbank Busway

Waiting at Southbank Busway

This was taken whilst waiting for a bus to work with my son at Southbank Busway, I catch a lot of public transport, so expect that sort of stuff to rear it’s topical head, every now and again.

Pretty slack of a web designer to use a template for their blog, but hey, I’ve hated the default themes that come packaged with Content Management Systems for ages.

So rather then wait for some spare time between life, dronework and study to design the blog I thought I’d just start it and find a nice design that also had valid CSS and XHTML. (I’m a code designer, wysisyg is for the weak)

So many thanks to the designer Sam.

links to the design are in the footer. (ie scroll down)
